Early signs your pet's health is changing

What to keep an eye on

• Weight: an unexplained gain or loss, even a small one. Weigh your pet once a month.
• Thirst and urination: drinking or peeing more than usual can point to kidney disease or diabetes.
• Stamina: shorter walks, more rest or reluctance to jump.
• Coat and skin: a dull coat, flaking or a cat that stops grooming.
• Behaviour: confusion, restlessness at night or changes in sleep.
• Mouth: bad breath, drooling or chewing on one side.

Keep simple notes

Write down the weight, and anything that changes, with the date. Patterns are much easier to see on paper than from memory, and they give your vet something concrete to work with.

Regular check-ups

An annual check-up is common for adult pets, and many vets advise twice a year for seniors. Blood and urine tests can reveal kidney changes before your pet shows any symptoms.
