Longevity research in dogs: what is happening now

Research into ageing in dogs is moving quickly. It is exciting, and it is also early.

Este artículo está disponible en inglés.

The Dog Aging Project

This open-science project follows tens of thousands of companion dogs across the United States, collecting data on health, lifestyle and environment. The aim is to understand why some dogs age better than others, and how that might apply to people too.

Rapamycin

Within the project, the TRIAD trial is testing whether a low dose of rapamycin, a drug that slows ageing in laboratory animals, can extend healthy life in middle-aged dogs. The results are not in yet.

Drugs aimed at longevity

Companies such as Loyal are developing medicines intended to extend healthy lifespan in dogs and are working through approval with the US regulator. None of these is an approved longevity treatment yet.

What this means for you today

None of this replaces the basics. The interventions with solid evidence right now are the ones in this Academy: a lean body, a complete diet, daily movement and early detection.
