Movement and muscle: staying strong into old age

Older pets rarely slow down because of one disease. Often they slowly lose the muscle that keeps them moving.

Cet article est disponible en anglais.

Why muscle matters

With age, dogs and cats lose muscle mass, a process called sarcopenia. Less muscle means less support for the joints, less stamina and a greater risk of falls and injury. It can happen even when body weight stays the same, because fat takes the place of muscle.

What helps

  • Daily movement suited to age and breed: several shorter walks are often better for seniors than one long one.
  • Low-impact activity for stiff joints, such as swimming or walking on grass or sand.
  • Play for cats: a few short play sessions a day with a toy they can chase.
  • Enough good-quality protein, unless your vet advises otherwise for a medical reason.

Watch the back and hind legs

Muscle loss often shows first along the spine and in the hind legs. If your pet's back feels bonier, or they struggle with stairs or jumping, mention it to your vet.
